24-hour Ambulatory pH and Impedance Monitoring

Procedure

24-hour Ambulatory pH and Impedance Monitoring

A thin sensor records acid exposure in the food pipe over 24 hours, while you continue normal daily activity. The gold-standard test for confirming reflux disease.

What is it?

A small sensor is placed in the lower food pipe. It records the number, duration and timing of acid (and non-acid) reflux events over 24 hours.

You wear a small recorder on a belt and continue your normal activities, recording meals and symptoms.

Who needs it?

  • Suspected reflux that has not responded to medication.
  • Before surgical or endoscopic anti-reflux procedures.
  • Atypical symptoms (chronic cough, hoarseness) that may be related to reflux.

How it works

A nasal catheter is placed, or a wireless capsule is clipped to the food pipe lining during endoscopy.

You wear the recorder for 24 hours and return it the next day.

Preparation

  • Acid-suppressing medications may need to be stopped 1 to 2 weeks before. Your doctor will advise.

Recovery

  • No recovery required.

Risks

Mild nasal discomfort with the catheter type.
